People Across the South West of Scotland are Invited to Take the Plunge for Fishing Families. The Fishermen’s Mission is inviting people across South West of Scotland to brave chilly waters this autumn, as the Big Dip returns from 5 to 11 October.

Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, the charity is aiming to raise £10,000 to help fishermen and their families. Members of the public are being encouraged to dip in the sea, rivers, lochs, lakes or even paddling pools, to raise vital funds for the people who bring seafood to our tables. This year’s campaign also includes the launch of a new set of free educational activities for primary schools, helping children explore fishing, seafood, and Britain’s maritime heritage.

Founded in 1881, the Fishermen’s Mission is the only national charity dedicated solely to supporting active and former fishermen and their dependants. As it approaches its 145th anniversary this October, the charity continues to provide practical, emotional and pastoral support to fishing families facing hardship, illness, injury, or bereavement. With deep-rooted fishing connections across South West Scotland, the charity hopes that both the Big Dip and its new educational resources will celebrate the UK’s rich fishing heritage while helping raise vital funds and awareness for today’s fishing families.

Ali Godfrey, Director of Business Development for the Fishermen’s Mission, said: “We’re excited to be launching our new primary school activity packs, and we’re hoping to see even more teachers take the plunge this year. “Last year, teachers and staff at Shakespeare Primary School dunked into tubs of cold water on the playing field, much to the delight of the cheering pupils. It was a fun and memorable day for all involved, and they raised over £500 for the charity.” Individuals, families, workplaces, clubs, community groups and church groups are all invited to get involved.

The charity is encouraging supporters to start planning now by choosing a location, gathering friends and family, and setting up their fundraising pages via the Fishermen’s Mission website.
