On Saturday 6 September, parkrun marked a remarkable milestone: it’s one millionth unique volunteer. To honour the occasion, Founder Paul Sinton-Hewitt CBE shared an open letter with the global parkrun community, celebrating the movement as one built on “love, support, and belonging.”
Levengrove parkrun – West Dunbartonshire’s only event of its kind – is proud to be part of this global celebration and is actively welcoming new volunteers to join its vibrant team.
Since its launch on 7 December 2019, Levengrove parkrun has become a local favourite. To date, 5,469 participants have completed 24,762 parkruns, covering 123,810 km and achieving 4,220 new Personal Bests. Behind the scenes, 364 individuals have volunteered an impressive 4,367 times.
Councillor William Rooney praised the event, saying: “As a keen local runner, this is my favourite parkrun. I’ve both volunteered and run the course, and each experience is equally rewarding. It’s a brilliant way to enjoy fresh air, cheer others on, and soak up the positivity all around. There’s a genuine sense of community – and plenty of smiles. It’s a fantastic way to start the weekend right!”
There are many ways to get involved, from tail walking and marshalling to barcode scanning, timekeeping, and handing out finish tokens.
Anna Napier from the Levengrove parkrun core team added: “Volunteering at parkrun is an easy and fun way to get involved in your community. No experience is needed – Levengrove parkrun has an amazing core group of volunteers who are always happy to show newcomers the ropes. It’s a great way to gain new skills, meet new people, and enjoy the beauty of Levengrove Park.”
