St Margaret of Scotland Hospice invite the community to support their new fundraising appeal which will help them to continue to provide the highest quality end of life care for another 75 years.

St Margaret of Scotland Hospice is based in Clydebank, near Glasgow. It is the oldest and largest Hospice in Scotland. The hospice offers a peaceful, homelike environment for patients, their families and their friends.

Right now, the Hospice is at the start of a significant refurbishment programme which will create a more comfortable and nurturing environment for patients, their families and their friends.

The entire project will cost around £5 million, and the modernised facilities will support the provision of the highest standard of end-of-life care for many years to come.

Hospice Chief Executive Officer, Sister Rita Dawson, MBE says;

“Here at St Margaret of Scotland Hospice comfort, peace, and serenity are at the heart of our story. Our aim is to ensure those who are admitted to the Hospice take a sigh of relief when they come through our doors and into their sanctuary.

July 2025 starts a new chapter in the history of the Hospice, and we are seeking to raise funds for vital areas of development including a full refurbishment of our Specialist Palliative Care Centre, the St Joseph’s Ward, which will build on our existing standard of excellence, by creating a contemporary, nurturing environment for all. In addition, we are seeking to replace our external cladding, windows, and roofing.

Underlying this work is future proofing the Hospice’s estate.  We are continuing our story; this is the next chapter, and we invite our community to join with us in transforming care together.”

Sister Rita Dawson MBE, Chief Executive of St Margaret of Scotland Hospice

The Hospice has touched the lives of thousands of patients who need end of life care.  The ambitious and vital building works will include:

  • the reconfiguration and refurbishment of our specialist palliative care Inpatient Unit, St Joseph’s Ward. This includes the creation of bright, modern individual bedrooms with ensuite facilities and beds for family and friends to stay overnight.
  • the installation of a vibrant and peaceful roof garden to enhance the patient experience. Fostering a sense of nature and green space, the garden will encourage the nesting of birds, the buzz of bees and the flourish of beautiful flowers and plants.
  • the replacement of roofing, windows and cladding that are now over 30 years old.

St Margaret of Scotland Hospice is appealing to the community during this exciting time. Those wishing to contribute can make a donation via www.smh.org.uk. The generosity of supporters will help to deliver quality care now and into the future.

The Hospice creates moments of connection, providing solace amidst challenges and leaves a lasting impact on the lives we touch. Our commitment to dignity, respect and holistic care encompasses all that we do.

The Hospice does not charge patients or their families for their stay, nor do we place any time limit on how long patients can stay.
